About Troop 966
Troop 966 has been operating continuously since its original charter in 1969. Troop 966 emphasizes character development, citizenship training, mental and physical fitness through an active, broad based outdoor program. Outdoor activities vary from single day outings, such as a day-hike, bike ride or service project, to long term outings lasting a week or longer.
The outdoor activities program exposes each Scout to a variety of environments and skills that promote their physical and mental development, under the guidance of trained adult leaders. These activities are offered at an introductory level for new scouts, and with increasing levels of difficulty as they become stronger and more skilled.
The week of summer camp, the long term backpacks, and the week long canoe trips of recent years have been popular, and have been very rewarding for those who have participated.
Troop 966 traditionally offers a week long summer camp experience each year. BSA summer camps usually offer a wide variety of activities in a structured environment. Two camps we like to go to are Camp Emerald Bay on Catalina Island and Camp Chawanakee on the shores of Shaver Lake in the High Sierras.
Troop 966 traditionally has a week long backpack each summer. These outings are considered relatively strenuous, with scouts participating starting with their second or third year of Boy Scouts. Each year we have been hiking segments of approximately 50-60 miles each.
One of our popular activities for Spring Break has been a 50+ mile canoe trip on the Colorado River. This trip includes 5 nights of camping, 3-4 days of paddling, and one day dedicated to performing a service project.
